Tottenham’s new signing, Vincent Janssen; A shadow of Harry Kane.

On 12 July 2016, Janssen joined Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for £17 million (€20 million) on a four-year contract becoming the most expensive player sold by AZ Alkmaar (a Dutch outfit) in their football history.

Not sure if Harry Kane is English-Janssen or Janssen is Dutch-Kane, with the two strikers having won the golden boot award in their respective leagues for the concluded 2015/2016 season although the pair endured slow starts to the campaign, only to flourish and finish top scorers, many relating stats prove that the new signing on the same par with the England striker, Harry Kane.

Janssen is understood to be a two-footed player and is credited with good finishing, movement and pace. Due to his strength, he has “exceptional” hold-up play and can bring teammates into play. He is good passer of the ball, can set up goal-scoring opportunities for teammates. He is also praised for his work ethic. His weaknesses are shots from outside the penalty box, the timing of his movement and ball control.

Janssen is a striker whose game is similar to that of Harry Kane although you need to struggle to see a weakness in the lad’s game. The England international is capable of drifting to the wings in order to run the channels, but – as both strikers goal return last season suggests – are lethal in and around the 18-yard box (23 of Kane’s 25 league goals were from inside the 18-yard area; all Vincent Janssen’s 27 league were from inside the 18-yard area).

Both strikers averaged 73% pass completion rate each last term, Janssen won 33.87% of the aerial duels he faced while Harry Kane won 33.64%, an insipid 0.23% difference; Kane attempted a total of 159 shots and Janssen had just 8 lesser; Janssen’s average of 4.5 shots per game was second only to Hakim Ziyech (4.9) in the Eredivisie last season, while Kane ranked second (4.2) in that regard in the Premier League.

The similarities are striking and it is shocking Spurs fought hard to ward off interest from European rivals to secure Janssen. The duo are confident in their ability to go for goal and it evidently has the desired effect given their respective goal returns last term. Importantly, though, is that Janssen’s arrival means Kane has some solid competition for a regular starting berth.
